Description Meet Lisa, one of six ceramic birds designed by American Howard Smith (1928 – 2021) in the 1990’s for the retailer Arabia, Finland. There were six birds in the Parvi series – all modernistic in their design and shape. The birds were given Finnish names. This is Lisa. The birds came in white, black, green, blue, yellow & green colours. Each bird was presented in a cardboard box, with a folded information card. Lisa will arrive with original box, but sadly the card has been lost to time. Lisa bird measures approximately 20cm in height x 16.5cm length. No damage. The other birds in the flock were Timo, Paavo, Kaisa, Tom & Emma. Howard Smith was an artist from New Jersey whose textiles and ceramics were produced by some of Scandinavia’s biggest design firms during the hey day of post war modernism. He brought exuberant colour to curtain design and decorated ceramics with a unique pictorial language that fused abstract forms with African symbols. Smith had over 40 solo exhibitions during his life. He emigrated from America to Finland in 1962. His Parvi series of birds was one of his most successful collaborations.
